French Novelist and illustrator. Born Jean Marcel Bruller, he studied at École Alsacienne and worked as a graphic artist until he was drafted into the French army during World War II. While recovering from war injuries he published "The Silence of the Sea" (1941) under the pseudonym "Vercors" through his underground publishing house, Editions de Minuit, that was part of the literary resistance movement during the German occupation of Paris. His later works, which carried fantasy or science fiction themes, included: "The Sand of Time" (1946), "More or Less Man" (1950), "Sylva" (1961), "Tender Castaway" (1974) and "The Horses of Time" (1977). His historical novel "Anne Boleyn" was published in 1985. He is generally known by his nickname "Vercors."
