Orvid Mayhew Backer, 86, of Columbia and formerly of Fulton, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 1995, at Columbia Regional Hospital. Services will be held at a later date. Mr. Backer was born Jan. 12, 1908, to Jake and Jenny Taylor Backer. He married Marjorie Ayer Lutz in 1947, and she preceded him in death. He served in the European and African theaters during World War II and was an accomplished pianist and musical technician. Survivors include two stepsons, John Lutz and George Lutz, both of St. Louis; and a cousin. He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Backer, and a stepson, William Lutz.
