Giles Peter Ripley was the son of Benjamin & Clarissa (Webb) Ripley of Jefferson County, New York. He married Ann Susan Sheldon on July 9, 1840, in New York, and they eventually migrated to LaGrange, Ohio, with the Sheldon family most likely in the late 1840's. In the very early 1960's they moved to Eaton County, Michigan, where Ann passed away in 1892.

Records show that he married a second time to Nancy Smith on March 29, 1863, and she passed away February 28, 1895. Just one month after her death and what would have been one day before their 42nd anniversary, Giles was found dead from a suicide by hanging in his barn in Kalamo.

His interrment was made near the Ripley family headstones in the Hillside Cemetery, at the very front area of Old Section D, Row 2, which is at the right of the right-hand drive.
