He was born April 21, 1927 in Shipshewana, IN to Cecil P. & Emily (Gadson) Murray, and has been a lifelong resident of this community.
On August 29, 1946 in South Bend, he was united in marriage to Lois J. Weaver. He is survived by his loving wife Lois of sixty-one years. Also surviving are two daughters, Marilyn (Rodger) Fisette of South Bend, and Laura (Larry) Arnold of Salt Lake City, UT, and a son, Richard "Dick" (Peggy) Murray of Plymouth.
Also surviving are ten grandchildren, Audra Yeo, Tammy Gisi, Debbie Stahly, Melissa Clingaman, Gary Arnold, Michael Arnold, Stephanie Murray, Jennifer Myer, Sarah Murray and Rick Murray, and seventeen great-grandchildren. A sister, Betty Rife of Beverly Hills, FL, and a half sister, Andrea J. Starkweather of Elkhart, survive Joe as well.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph L. Murray, Jr., on November 11, 1992, a granddaughter, Jennifer Arnold in 1973, a by his four brothers, Charles, George, Jack and Norman Murray.
Mr. Murray had worked as a mechanic for Norwalk Trucking, Tucker Trucking and retired from MTE Trailer Repair. In his retirement years, he and Lois spent seventeen winters in Florida. . He attended Journey Church in Granger, was a member of Teamsters Local #364, Sampson Naval Base Retiree, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 22, 2007, in Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Roger Coleman will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
