Doug the son of Otis R. Keefe and Nellie M.G. Keefe of Columbia S.C. enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 27, 1966 in Columbia S.C. In Vietnam PFC Keefe a member of H&S Co., 3d Battalion,. 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF

On May 20, during Operation HICKORY Company K made contact with an estimated Company size force of NVA in mutually supported well-fortified bunker while search the area in the vicinity of Nu Ho Khe near the Gio Linh and Cam Lo District border in Quang Tri Province. Company L reacted to assist in the battle that ensured with the well-equipped enemy. Company K suffered losses of eighteen Marines killed in the battle or died of their wounds, forty two were wounded, H&S Company lost five men killed in action with one Marine dead and declared missing. Company L losses were two Marines killed in action and eight wounded.

PFC Keefe was one of the casualties, he was killed in action, listed as missing and to date his remains have not been recovered. His Marker has been placed in the Elmwood Cemetery "In Memory".
