Charles Daniel (Dan) Darden Sr., 79, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away March 22, 2003 in his home. A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Mr. Darden was a retired planner-estimator with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as well as owner of Churchland Emergency Plumbing. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army Artillary Division veteran. While serving in the Pacific Theatre, he received the following awards: American Theatre service medal, Asiatic-Pacific service medal with 4 bronze service stars, Philippine Liberation service ribbon with 2 bronze service stars, a Good Conduct medal, and the World War II Victory medal. Dan was a very talented songwriter. He was the poet of the Darden Family, a prominent country and western, gospel, hillbilly group in the eastern part of Virginia. Dan had many poems and songs to his credit. He wrote the song that Abbie Neal and Her Ranch Girls recorded called "Traitor in Love." He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally F. Darden; his father, Col. Polk Darden and his mother, Mittie (who were a 3rd generation of family musicians; and his brothers, Leon and Willie; and sister, Margaret. Burial took place on March 26, 2003.
