Charles John "John" Hoad came to America in 1872 with his parents, Charles Alchin Hoad and Ellen Cork Hoad; and two sisters; Ellen "Nellie" Hoad and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hoad. They settled on a farm near Savannah, Wayne, New York, where his parents had three more children. He first married Rose, then was divorced in 1900. He met Edna Roberta Wynkoop when his sister, Lizzie Hoad Barrell was a neighbor to Edna's family. They married in 1910 in Santa Barbara, California after the death of Edna's mother. He and Edna lived the rest of their days in beautiful, sunny Santa Barbara. He earned a living there working as a janitor. His sister, Emma Hoad, came to live with them in 1947 after the death of their sister, Nellie Hoad Bogart. He lived to the age of 99. The three of them are buried together at the Santa Barbara Cemetery.
