Sgt. 1st Class Wyatt A. Goldsmith, 28, of Colville, Wash., died July 15 at Camp Bastion Hospital, Afghanistan of injuries suffered July 15 when insurgents attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenade fire in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. Wyatt began his education in Kirkland and in 1994 began sixth grade in Colville, following the move of his family. He was a 2001 graduate of Colville High School. Wyatt entered the U.S. Army in June of 2004 as a Special Forces recruit. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group from Joint Base Lewis-McCord and was serving his third deployment. Wyatt is survived by his parents, John and Lorie Goldsmith, Colville, WA; sister Nicole Goldsmith, Seattle, WA; uncles, Larry Goldsmith, Everett, WA, Rick Torgerson and wife, Donnis, Gautier, MS; great aunt, Doris Rumpf, Issaquah, WA; cousins, Lisa Summers, Scott Goldsmith, Stephen Torgerson, and Angela Stewart. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal, according to the Defense Department.
