Chloe was the third of seven children born to Julius Clemens and Lydia Alice Crum, who married four days after Christmas on 29 Dec 1878 in Marshall County, Indiana. Their seven babes in arms were: Marion Oliver, b. 26 Nov 1881; Grace Minnie, b. 5 Aug 1884; Chlodell Minerva, b. 14 Jan 1887; Nellie Ruth, b. 28 Sep 1898; Janet/Jennette "Nettie" Pearl, b. 16 Jul 1889 and Ross D., b. 1 Dec 1900.

The family first appeared together on the 1880 Census, living in West Township, Marshall Co., Indiana, which is the Burr Oak area. Julius Clemens, 29, was earning a living as a blacksmith. Lydia, 18, was home with 6-month-old Rena.

Chloe likely debuted with her family on the 1890 Census. Sadly, we'll never know for sure.

On 25 Oct 1996, Chloe's older sister Rena married Sidney Williams.

The 1900 Census caught back up with the family, living on Scott St. in Union Twp., Marshall Co., Indiana. Julius Clemens, 48, was still a blacksmith. Lydia, 38, reported that she had had six children, all of them living. There with their parents were Oliver (aka Marion), 18 and working as a day laborer; Grace, 15 and noted as a servant; Chloe, 13; Nettie, 10; and 1-year-old Nellie.

Six years after that enumeration, Chloe married Frank Lloyd Brooke on 14 Sep 1906 in Marshall Co., Indiana. Two years later, they welcomed daughter Laura Clemens on 23 Nov 1908. Laura was likely named after her paternal grandmother Laura Brooke.

The 1910 Census placed the family in Culver, Marshall Co., Indiana. Frank Brooke, 24, was working as a stenographer/secretary. Chloe, 23, reported that she had had one child. There with her parents was 1-year-old daughter Laura. There to help with the running of the household was 67-year-old widow Lizzie Young, noted as a housekeeper.

Chloe and Frank welcomed son Alfred on 13 Feb 1914. A month later, Chloe's sister Rena died in Mar of 1914. She was only 34 years old and left behind a grieving husband five children—Ruby, 16; Herbert, 13; Genevieve, 10; Harry, 8; and Howard, 6.

The Brooke family was still living in Union Twp., Marshall Co., Indiana when the 1920 Census came around. Frank Brooke, 34, was working as the advertising manager at a private school. Chloe, 32, was home with Laura, 11, and Alfred, 5. The private school in question was Culver Military Academy, which in 1920, was just for boys.

After graduating from high school circa 1926, daughter Laura headed off to college. (From: The Culver Citizen – 6 Jun 1928 p. 2 & 27 Jun 1928 p. 1) "Miss Laura Brooke, who has been attending school the past winter at St. Mary's, returned home Monday to spend her summer vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brooke." & "Mrs. Frank Brooke and daughter, Laura, are going into Chicago Thursday afternoon and on Friday Miss Laura will go to northern Michigan to Camp Kumagan, where she is an instructor for the summer."

In 1930, the family was living at 425 Lake Shore Dr. in Culver. Frank Brooke, 44, was the registrar at Culver Military Academy. Chloe, 43, was home with Laura, 21, and Alfred, 16.

A year after that enumeration took place, daughter Laura married Frederick Richard Braden on Christmas Day 25 Dec 1931 at the family's home in Culver. Six years later, younger brother Alfred married Geraldine Caldwell on 26 Jul 1937 in Columbiana, Florida.

In 1934, Chloe and Frank's son Alfred graduated from Culver Military Academy with honors.

By 1940, Chloe and Frank's nest on Lake Shore Drive was empty. Frank, 54, was one of the office managers at CMA. Chloe, 53, was keeping house.

On his 27 Apr 1942 WWII registration, Frank Brooke, 63, reported that he was still working at CMA. Wife Chloe was noted as that person who would always know his address. We find out that he was 5' 10" tall, weighed 160 lbs., and had blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion.

They were still at 425 Lake Shore Dr. in Culver in 1950. Frank Brooke, 64, had shifted gears and was working as an insurance agent at an insurance company. Chloe, 63, was likely thinking of ways to spoil grandchildren Martha, Suzanne, Patricia, Deborah and Frank.

There was cause for celebration in the fall of 1963. (From: The Culver Citizen – 18 Sep 1963 p. 14) "Mr. and Mrs. Frederick (Laura) Braden of Kalamazoo, spent Sunday with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brooke, on their 57th wedding anniversary." Chloe and Frank would celebrate six more anniversaries before death pried them apart, claiming Frank on 5 Mar 1970. Chloe lasted another three years before following him into the light on 28 Mar 1973, aged 85.
