Maxie Green Richards was the son of John Henry and Mary Etta Rook Richards. He was 1st married to Clara Etolia Campbell Richards with whom he had four children, Sidney Toy Richards, Anna Mozelle Richards Fuller Payton, Jimmie Ruth Richards Cogdill, and Maxie Edward Richards. He was then married to Shirley (Shelley) Kinsey Richards.
