Charles Kenneth 'Ken' Anderson, 78, of Lumberton Leas, died on July 8, 2011 from pancreatic cancer following a brief illness.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Henry Anderson and Bessie Ella (Austin).

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Faunce) Anderson; his daughter, Amy Anderson Deik (Tim) of Beverly, MA; and a granddaughter, Elsie. He is also survived by his brother, Donald H. Anderson of Edgewater Park; and sister, Charlotte Anderson Baker of Cinnaminson.

Mr. Anderson was born in Bridgeboro (Delran Township) and has always lived in Burlington County. He graduated from Palmyra High School, Rutgers University (BS in Sanitary Engineering) and Drexel Institute of Technology, now Drexel University, (MS in Civil Engineering).

He was licensed by the state of New Jersey a Professional Engineer, Land Surveyor, and Professional Planner. After 42 years in private practice he retired as a Past President and Past Chairman of the Board from Lord, Anderson, Worrell & Barnett in 1996.

Ken was a member of the Rutgers Engineering Society, the National Society of Professional Engineers (Past President of the Southern New Jersey Chapter), American Society of Civil Engineers, American Water Works Association, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and the NJ Society of Municipal Engineers.

Anderson's avocation was the volunteer fire service. Ken became a Junior member of Delran Fire Company No. 1 in 1948. He was Chief of the Company in 1960 and 1961. He served terms as Recording Secretary and President.

Ken became a life member and past president of the Burlington County Fire Chiefs Association, the Burlington County Firefighters Association, The Burlington County Fire Police Association, and the Burlington County Exempt Firemen's Association.

Ken was elected Executive Committeeman from the County to the State Exempt Firemen's Association. He ran for state office and was subsequently elected to a two-year term as State President.

Ken was also an active member of the State Fire Chiefs Association. He served on many committees. He edited the Association newsletter, the Five Trumpet Journal, for more than 30 years. More recently he compiled a bi-weekly email newsletter, the RELAY. He also served a two-year term as Association President. In 2006 he was named President, Emeritus.

He was a 50-year member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and it's Eastern Division. For nine years, Ken represented the Eastern Division on the IAFC Constitution, By-laws, and Resolutions Committee.

When the State Fire Safety Commission was created, Ken was appointed as representative of a volunteer firematic organization. The Commission Chair appointed him to Chair the Training and Education Advisory Council.

After the 9-11 legislation was adopted, Ken was appointed to the statutory position of representative of the State Fire Chiefs Association to the Domestic Security Preparedness Planning Group.

When the Fire Science Technology program was established at Burlington County College, Ken was appointed Coordinator.

The Emergency Services Advisory Board selected Ken for its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

Visiting hours will be Friday, July 22, 2011 from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Lankenau & Van Newenhizen Moorestown Memorial Home, 334 Chester Ave., (Chester & Central), Moorestown. Fireman's services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. and members of all branches of the fire service are invited to attend.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Phillip Stowell 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 207 W. Main St., Moorestown. Interment of ashes will follow immediately in the church memorial garden.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Reserve Fund, 1 Medford Leas Drive, Medford, NJ 08055; the Book of Remembrance, Trinity Episcopal Church, 207 W. Main St., Moorestown, NJ 08057; the IAFC Foundation, Attn: Jennifer Cooke, 4025 Fair Ridge Drive, Suite 300, Fairfax, VA 22033; or a charity of the donor's choice.
