David Pfouts, the son of Henry Pfouts (1806-1846) and Fanny Gable (1804-1870), was born in Wayne County, Ohio on 19 January 1835. He later changed his name to Fouts, but retained the P as his middle initial. When President Lincoln issued a call for 300,000 volunteers following the debacle at Bull Run, David enlisted in the 1st Ohio Cavalry. He was 5 ft 8 inches tall with a dark complexion and blue eyes. He mustered into Company C which along with Company A was immediately detached from the Regiment and sent to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where they served under Generals Shields, Banks, and Kilpatrick. These "saw the elephant" at Kernstown and then fought at First Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, and Gettysburg. They were reunited with the regiment in September, 1864, on the outskirts of Atlanta, and thereafter operated against Hood and Forrest in Northern Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. David was promoted to Corporal on February 1, 1865. The 1st Ohio Cavalry then participated in Wilson's Raid on Macon, Georgia, in March-April of 1865 and captured President Davis at Irwinsville, Georgia on May 10, 1865.
After his discharged at Nashville on 19 June 1865 David returned to teaching at common schools, the activity in which was engaged in 1860 in Williamson County, Illinois. However, he did so in Colfax County, Nebraska, where his brother Henry farmed. His whereabouts in 1880 could not be determined but he was living in Fresno, California, when Post 92 of the G.A.R. was founded there on November 26, 1885. David appears on its muster roll at member 19, but was mis-identified as Darius P. Fouts. A year later he married Mary Florence Seiler (1853-1935) at Sacramento, California. She was a "widow" in the sense that her husband had disappeared into the mountains of Oregon in 1882. In 1891 her daughter, Lillian Adams, married Arthur Banta, the son of Henry Banta, who like David, was a charter member of Post 92 at Fresno. According to the 1900 census David was a painter and he and Mary lived at 1428 J Street in Fresno. Living with them was Laurie, a daughter born in December 1887. She later went by the name Florence. David and his family moved to San Jose before 1910 and were living at 872 Second Street in the city's Third Ward when he passed away on 6 June 1928 at the age of 93 years. He was described in the 1920 census as a retired teacher. His wife, Mary, died on August 11, 1930 at San Jose.
