Beverly Russell Alexander

Age 79, of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, died on July 7, 2011 at her home.

A native of Wilmington, Beverly was a 1949 graduate P.S. duPont High School and graduated from the Delaware School of Nursing located, at the Delaware Hospital. Beverly started her nursing career at the Delaware Hospital then took time away to raise her family. Later, she worked for an obstetrics/gynecology practice, ultimately working in the office of Dr. William Gallaher. In 1978, Beverly started as a volunteer usher at the Grand Opera House and, in 1992, became a staff member supervising the usher volunteers, retiring in October, 2010.

Beverly was an active, faithful and longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church, 36th and Washington Sts. where, among other involvements, she was the organist, treasurer of the United Methodist Women, and was fondly known as "The Soup Queen" for her assistance in the twice annual Calvary Church vegetable beef soup sales.

Her husband of 50 years, John T. Alexander Sr., died in 2002. Beverly is survived by their 4 children: John T. Alexander Jr., Kathleen J. Walter (Charles), Kevin D. Alexander (Debra) and Eric S. Alexander (Susan); and 6 grandchildren: James, Melanie, Amanda, Brittney, Gavin and Kyle. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Margaret Russell, and her sister, Beryl R. Miller.

A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm, Friday, July 15 at the McCRERY & HARRA FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville (Route 202, south of Silverside Rd.), where the funeral service, officiated by Rev. Shane Moran, will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, July 16. Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park. The family suggests honoring the memory of Beverly R. Alexander by sending a contribution to Calvary United Methodist Church, 36th & Washington Sts., Wilmington, DE 19802.
