The 2nd Regiment Infantry NY Volunteers was formed from National Guard troops in early 1898 during the Spanish American War. They were stationed in Tampa, FL during the summer, but were never shipped to Cuba to join US forces there due to an outbreak of typhoid fever. They returned to Troy, NY and were mustered out in the fall. James A. Holden of Co. L, died Sept. 13th, 1898 at Troy City Hospital, one of 32 members of the regiment to die of disease, mainly typhoid fever.
