Alvin L. "Jake" Arnold was a: patriot; a Christian; a loving son; faithful husband; father and grandfather. He went to his final rest and reward July 4, 2011. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all. He looked forward to the time he would be reunited with his wife Helen and all those who have gone before him.

He was born May 21, 1923 to M.K. Arnold and Terra Belle Taylor in Peach Orchard, Arkansas. He was the eldest of 9 children. All of his siblings have stated many times he was the rock and foundation for their family. He took all his responsibilities seriously and made sure the family was provided for.

He left Arkansas at the age of 17 and joined the CCC camps in Oregon. This began his life long love to travel. His family has often said they had gasoline in their veins. He volunteered for the Navy 11-29-1942. The Navy sent him up and down the entire Atlantic coast. Then positioned him as a gunners mate on fleets headed to Europe, the Mediterranean, India, the coast of Africa and the Suez Canal. The final destination was to enter the Panama Canal. He recounted this story in the past few years. He was looking through his gun sight as their ship entered the canal. He saw a periscope and called his superior. His superior gave orders to shoot for the sub and they sent that enemy sub to the bottom, with "evidence" of the kill rising to the surface. It was only in the past few years that he told us some of his wartime stories. He was proud of his honorable discharge in 1945 and his various medals.

Upon release from the Navy he returned to Arkansas and began working as an auto mechanic. He had a natural talent for diagnosing car problems and pursued that career.

April 17, 1947 he and Helen D. Dudley were married. Soon after their first year they moved to Midland, Trxas to seek better work opportunities. Mother was employed by Shell Oil Company and Dad started with Murray Auto. He soon met W.F. Hejl and worked for Broadway Motors for a number of years. In the 1960's he bought a building and became his own boss. Over the years he crossed paths with many young mechanics and made many friends in the car repair business. Many people have benefited from his knowledge about cars over the years. He rarely passed a car in trouble with out pulling over to assist.

During the years he had Arnold's Garage Helen was his bookkeeper and later Patsy took her job. All of his daughters worked in some capacity for Arnold's Garage. After retiring from the car repair business he contracted for Texaco. This second career allowed him to employ 3 of his sons-in-law between and in addition to their jobs.

His marriage to Helen lasted until her death December 5, 2009. Their marriage of 62 years produced 3 daughters: Kathy Huckabay-Wallace, Patsy/Bob McKinney and Sharon/Darrell Rhea. He was grandfather to 5 grandchildren; Paige/Jason Price, Blake/ Julie Huckabay, Hollie Huckabay, Dusty/Ashleigh Rhea and Kiah Rhea and 1 great grandchild.

Jake was a life long fan of baseball. He played for a local farm team and was scouted to play for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was only 17 and his father would not sign permission to leave home. He continued to play recreationally and even played for an early ball club in Midland called the Chiefs. This love was passed on to his daughter Sharon in her pursuits in softball. Then as his grandkids became active he attended all of their activities in swimming, piano, soccer and band. He was especially active with Blake and his career from peewee ball to high school baseball at Midland Christian School. He could be counted on to drive Blake and his friends home from any out of town game.

His church life at North A and Tennessee Church of Christ was the driving force of his life. His mother raised him in the Church of Christ and he was a faithful servant until his death. While attending North A he served as a youth class teacher with his good friend Bill Chrane. He also served 14 years as a deacon and then 6 years as an elder. Many of his life long friendships began with meetings at North A.

We would like to thank Gary Stain for his tireless communion service each Sunday to Jake at Manor Park. Also we thank the nurses and staff with Manor Park and Hospice Midland.
