Following is a birds-eye view into the lives of Walter Alexander & Minnie Lee (Brown) Callaway.

Minnie Lee, the third of William Henry & Mollie Marie (Hennessee) Brown's five children, was born in Howe, Grayson Co, TX where her family had lived for many years. Her siblings were Clara Marie, Owen Cleveland, Leila, & John Leslie.

She married Walter Alexander Callaway in Howe on February 1, 1910. Walter, born in Greenville County, South Carolina, was the son of John Whitten & Ida Frances (Barton) Callaway.

On April 15, 1910, Walter & Minnie, both age 22, were living in Howe where he worked as a merchant in the retail grocery business. Their daughter, Wanda, was born on April 29, 1913.

In 1915 Minnie's parents & siblings moved to Jack Co, TX because of the rich, fertile soil, which was good for farming. She was the only one of the family to remain in Grayson County.

On June 5, 1917, Walter, age 29, registered for WWI. He was working for the U.S. postal service in Howe as a rural mail carrier. The record shows that he was born in Greenville, SC on Aug. 21, 1887. His physical description was medium height & stout build with brown eyes and hair.

The following month, July 9th, Minnie gave birth to their second daughter, Jeanette. She died on November 3, 1918, & was buried in Hall Cemetery.

On Jan 23, 1920, Walter and Minnie Lee, both age 32, lived in Van Alstyne, Grayson Co, TX where he had a job as a mail carrier on a rural route. Their daughter, Wanda, was six years old.

Sometime over the next ten years they returned to Howe. On April 2, 1930, they owned a home valued at $8000. Walter, age 42, was a traveling salesman dealing in dry goods. Their daughter, Wanda, was 16. She later married Charles E. Woodrow. Exactly ten years later, April 2, 1940, Walter, age 58, still had a job at the post office, where he was a substitute mail carrier.

Walter was admitted to St. Vincent Hospital in Sherman because of intestinal cancer. He had two surgeries; one on June 15 & the other on July 15. He was in the hospital six weeks before dying from Peritonitis at 5:30 a.m. on July 24, 1950. He had lived 62 years, 11 months, & 3 days. Mrs. Eugene Woodrow was the informant on his death certificate. He was buried on July 25.

Bessie remained in Howe & lived almost 16 years following Walter's death. She was in The Chapel of Care Nursing home when she died at 11:40 a.m. on March 20, 1976, from an Acute Myocardial Infarction. She was 82. Her nephew, Jack Callaway, was the informant on her death certificate. She was buried on March 22.
