Robert John Sullivan was born in Marion, Indiana, on August 2, 1903, son of Charles A. Sullivan & Catherine Wickens. He attended his freshman year of High School at Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tennessee and completed the remaining years in Arkansas where he graduated from De Queen High School on May 23, 1923. Bob enrolled at Oklahoma University in the fall of 1923. As there was no money available for his folks to send him to college, he worked his nights and weekends as a hospital attendant and waiter. During the summer time he worked in the oil fields, except the year he went to sea and worked on an oil tanker traveling around the world. He left Beaumont, Texas on June 16, 1927 on S.S. India Arrow with a cargo of kerosene heading for Egypt, India, and China and returned to Beaumont on June 17, 1928 by way of California and the Panama Canal. After he docked in Beaumont and had traveled about 30,000 nautical miles he returned to College in September of that year, resumed his studies, and graduated on June 4, 1929 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He started working for Humble Oil & Refining Company, now Exxon-Mobil, on June 30, 1929 as a Gas Engineer. During his engineering career with Humble, Bob had made many important technical contributions in the design, construction, and operation of Humbles industrial gas systems, compressor stations, and natural gas processing plants. Bob retired on May 1, 1963 and was able to enjoy 16 years of retirement before he passed away on July 12, 1979. He is laid to rest at the Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, Houston, TX.

This is my Grandpa Sullivan. He died when I was 14. He had emphysema and never smoked. The day he died, my Dad quit smoking and never did again. Deborah "DeDe" Sullivan
