Col. George Eugene Wehling, USAF (Retired) Born at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas Nov. 21, 1931, son of George W. and Viola Wehling, George graduated from high school in Shreveport, Louisiana, later attending Texas Technological College in 1953. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska in January 1970 under the Bootstrap Program. Colonel Wehling entered the U.S. Air Force as an Aviation Cadet March 15, 1953. Then earned his commission and pilot wings April 21, 1954 and married the love of his life Martha McIlnay on June 26th of that year. Highlights of Colonel Wehling's career include Armament Operations Officer and Chief of Ground Training Branch of the 320th Bomb Squadron, March AFB, California; Flight Commander of the 32nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Loan AB, France; Flight Commander of the 20th Tactical Recon Squadron, Shaw AFB, South Carolina; Flight Commander of the 20th Tactical Recon Squadron, Tan Son Nhut, Vietnam; Flight Commander of the 20th Recon Squadron, Udorn AB, Thailand; 10th Tactical Recon Squadron Commander, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho; Flight Commander of the 30th Tactical Recon Squadron, RAF Alconbury, England; Assistant Operations Officer, 32nd Tactical Recon Squadron, Alconbury; Chief, Contingency Branch, Operations and Plans Division, HQ. Tactical Air Command, Langley AFB, VA. The Colonel was Assistant Deputy Commander for Operations, 67 Tactical Recon Wing, Bergstrom AFB, Texas. On November 14, 1974 Colonel Wehling assumed command of the 36th Combat Support Group at Bitburg Air Base, Germany. He held this position until October 1977, when he was assigned to MacDill Air Force Base, Florida as the Base Commander for the 56th Combat Support Group. On March 6, 1981 the Colonel took the position as Base Commander for the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, 12th Air Force, 10th Air, Bergstrom AFB, Texas. Colonel Wehling was a Command Pilot with 283 combat hours in a RF-10l in Southeast Asia. Colonel Wehling holds the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Colonel Wehling retired on March 15, 1984 as the Base Commander after 31 years of service in the United States Air Force. George started an organization called the Austin Community Eagles Society composed of 06's in all services. He also started and owned Eagle Hardwood and Supply. George was a very active member of the Barton Creek Country Club and enjoyed playing in many golf tournaments.

Survived by his wife, Martha McIlnay Wehling; two sons, a daughter, grandson, and great grandchildren and a sister Mary Snyder.
