John H. Coon, Former Sexton, Buried Today

John H. Coon is being buried this afternoon in Cedar Grove Cemetery, where for many years he dug graves and tended the grass shrubbery. Mr. Coon died July 30 in St,Louis at the age of 93. As sexton of the cemetery, his tall, spare figure was a familiar sight to those who went to the cemetery to witness the burial of friends or relatives. He worked in the days before modern power equipment was used to dig in the rocky soil and it was not unusual for him to spend many hours digging and shaping a grave. He took pride in his craftsmanship with the saw and axe in the old days of the timber industry and was known as a outstanding craftsman.

Born in Wakeley, O. on March 29,1864, most of his life was spent on a farm north of Salem. Because of failing health, he left Salem several years ago to be closer to his children.

As a young man he married Mary Ambren, who with their two children, preceded him in death, later he married Katherine Sprague who died July 13, 1943. He had been a member of the Baptist Church since his youth. Surviving are two sons; Otis L. Coon and Kenneth Coon, Anita, IA. seven grandchildren, Nine great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. He also leaves three step-sons and three step-daughters.

Funeral services are being held at the Spencer Chapel by the Rev. C.O. Branson
