Charles Franklin Clemmons was born in Frederick County, Virginia in 1833 (Birthplace is now in West Virginia.) He was married the first time on September 1, 1857 to Eliza A. Kearney and had three sons, William, George and Benjamin, all whom perished during the Civil War in 1864 in Frederick, Virginia. He later married Elizabeth Stockman on October 18, 1866 and had four children, Ezra, Charles, Mary and Alfred. Eliza Stockman passed away in 1887. Later that same year, he married Celia Ann (Hazelett) Smith and they remained married until his death in 1906. Pneumonia was the cause of death from Defiance County death records. For twenty-six years he was a member of the Tueudawi lodge F.A.M. of Defiance. He also belonged to the Eusawocsa chapter and Defiance Commandery Knights Templars.
