Dr. Donald Lee Ackerman, 72, of Lynchburg, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at his residence. Born in Wellsburg, N.Y. on Aug. 23, 1938, he was a son of the late Charles Ackerman and Helen Borgeson Ackerman and was the husband of Phyllis Joann Ackerman.

Dr. Ackerman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He received his BA from Liberty University and his Masters and Doctorate from Trinity Theological Seminary. He served the Lord doing missionary work in the Philippines for 20 years. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and attended Forest Alliance Church.

In addition to Don's wife, he is survived by a son, Mark Charles Ackerman and his wife, Kimberly, of Evington; a daughter, Susan Joann Westbrook and her husband, Jeffrey, of Bedford; and four grandchildren: Morgan Ackerman, Elisabeth Westbrook, Isaac Westbrook and Caleb Westbrook.

A Celebration of Don's Life and Faith will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at Diuguid Waterlick. Interment will be private.

Don's family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 1, at the funeral home.

Dr. Ackerman's service is under the care and direction of Diuguid Funeral Service and Crematory, Waterlick Chapel on Timberlake Rd.
