He was the son of Henry Creswell Fleming, Sr. and Laura Barksdale Fleming, long time residents of Laurens. He graduated from Laurens High School (1936) and Presbyterian College (1940). He was in Army ROTC at PC and became a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Army officer in 1940. Cres was posted to Camp Carson in 1942 where he met and married his wife of 54 years Margery Nixon Bell, a native of Colorado Springs. They married on October 28, 1942 in Grace Episcopal Church. Colorado Springs remained his home until his death. Margery died in 1996.

Cres joined the Colorado Springs National Bank in 1946. He rose through various positions ending as the President and CEO at his retirement in 1984. As Chairman of the Board of CSNB, he coordinated the sale of the CSNB in 1985 to United Bank which later became Norwest Bank and the current Wells Fargo Bank. He served as a combat infantry officer in World War II and a Division staff officer during the Korean War. He was with the Colorado National Guard rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel (ret). He received two Bronze Stars and five battle stars during these conflicts among other citations.

Over the years Cres volunteered his time and leadership expertise in many areas of the community. One of the loves of Cres' life was gardening, especially rose gardening. He loved to show his gardens at his home, where he had an exceptional variety of roses. He served as president of the Men's Garden Club of Colorado Springs and the Colorado Springs Rose Society. He was an officer of the Men's Garden Club of the Rocky Mountain area and the Horticultural Arts Society.

Another love was fishing and bird hunting. He was an avid fly tier. A third passion was the history and the genealogy of his family. He enjoyed recounting stories of his family and his ancestors. He loved to help others with their genealogy. Visitors were welcomed into his home of 55 years and shown mementos of his family as well as his gardens.

Cres is survived by a daughter (Margery F. Scott of Colorado Springs), a son (H. Creswell Fleming, III of Durango), grandchildren (Robert Merrell of Centennial, Christopher Fleming of Las Vegas and Darcy Fleming of Flagstaff, AZ) and a great-granddaughter (Makenna Fleming of Las Vegas).
