In her early years, she worked for Glen Rogers in his dairy, then later at his gas station. During World War II, she worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition plant at Parsons, KS, and later operated her own cafe in Liberal. She was a lifelong member of the Hannon Free Will Baptist Church.
Along with her late husband, Dale, she owned and operated the Home Oil Company until the business was sold. She was a homemaker and was very active in several civic organizations in Liberal.
On January 14, 1946, she married Dale W. Charlton at Girard, KS. He preceded her in death May 26, 2001.
Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Long, and husband, Ron, of Liberal; four sisters, Alice Overstreet of Liberal, Muriel Peterson of Oskaloosa, MO, and Kaye Prettyman of Joplin, MO, who was raised in the home; two brothers, Lloyd Richmond (Buck) of Sheridan, WY., and Bill Rishmond of Kansas City, MO.
She also was preceeding in death by two daughters, Donna Rae and Nancy LaRue, who passed away in infancy. One sister, Ruby, also died in infancy.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Hannon Free Will Bapist Church, north of Liberal, with the Rev. Hollis Walker, and the Rev. George Naumann officiating. Burial was in the Liberal City Cemetery under the direction of the Bedene Funeral Home of Arma, KS.
