Longtime HCHS Team Physician Kenneth Eblen Dies at Age 82
Dr. Kenneth Eblen, 82, Henderson, died at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a Korean War U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a medical officer aboard the destroyer USS Billy Mitchell. He was a 60-year member of American Legion Worsham Post No. 40 and served as a Special Deputy Sheriff with the Henderson County Sheriff's Office. Dr. Eblen belonged to the Jerusalem Masonic Lodge No. 9, Rizpah Temple, and Royal Order of Jesters and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
He was a 50-year member of the Henderson County Lions Club and supporter of the Lions Eye Bank. He was co-founder of the Henderson County Little League and Niagara Volunteer Fire Department. Dr. Eblen received the Better Life Award, Humanitarian Category, from the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities. He organized the Explorer Scouts, Regional Council, as International Ambassadors. He was an honorary County Judge of Estill County, Kentucky, and an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Since 1955, he was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, where he also served as a Kentucky delegate. He was president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Practice and was a referring physician for the Shriner's Crippled Children's Program. Dr. Eblen was a member of the Field Teaching Faculty for the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. He served on the board of directors of the Henderson Red Cross and St. Anthony's Hospice. He was a founding member of Redbanks Nursing Home, where he served as medical director until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Kentucky Medical Association, and co-founder of the KMA Committee on Sports and School Health. He served as the team physician for Henderson County High School Athletics for more than 25 years.
Finally, he was a gentleman farmer, creating one of the first sheep herds in Henderson County with the assistance of the University of Kentucky Agricultural Extension Service. He was an avid bass fisherman and horseman. He was a physician, counselor, friend, and benefactor to thousands during his entire practice lifetime.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Eblen; his parents, Robert Donald and Doshia Haddix Eblen.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Walker Eblen; two daughters, Judith Johnson of St. Francisville, Ill., and Kathryn Townsend of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Dr. Donald Eblen of Newburgh, Ind.; two sisters, Margaret Alice Layman of New Orleans, La., and Louise Hager of Woodland Hills, Calif.; a brother, William T. Eblen of Lexington, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home. The Rev. Todd Linn, Ph.D., will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery, with full military rites performed by American Legion Worsham Post No. 40.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and until service time Tuesday at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be performed by Jerusalem Masonic Lodge No. 9 at 7 p.m. Monday.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Anthony's Hospice.
Pallbearers will be Tyson Hazelwood, Nathan Hazelwood, Tyler Eblen, Jesse Knight, Rolando Marruquin and Ashley Titzer.
