Joe Willis Bates, 73, of Appomattox, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996 at Appomattox Health Care Center.
He was born February 7, 1923 in Prince Edward County, a son of the late John D. Bates and Ida Belle Pembleton Bates. He was the widower of Rosemary Elizabeth Cumbey Bates.
Mr. Bates was a retired employee of Craddock-Terry Shoe Corp.
He is survived by four daughters, Vici Hines of Amelia, Betsy Bates and Frances McFadden both of Appomattox, Mary Ann Sudesberry of Farmville; one son, John Wayne Bates of Logansport, IN.; one brother, Fletcher Bates of Richmond; two sisters, Linda Parrish and Lizzie Bates, both of Richmond; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, 1996 in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home with interment in Pamplin Community Cemetery.
