Born in Appomattox County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Clifton and Elsie Ring Cumby. She was a homemaker and member of Pamplin United Methodist church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Vici R.Hines of Amelia, Frances G. McFadden of Appomattox, Mary Ann Sudesberry of Rice, Elizabeth Willis Bates of Pamplin; one son, John Wayne Bates of Logansport, Ind.; one sister, Frances Henson of Lynchburg; 12 grandchildren, three of whom she reared, Roger Dayle Bates, Jeffery Dale Bates, and Cynthia Ann Sudesberry; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were hgeld at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10 at Pamplin United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bart Weakley, burial in Pamplin Cemetery.
Robinson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
