The dealership was located at 1248 Broadway and was one of the largest Hudson franchises in the nation, as well as one of the largest Denver automobile dealerships. Starting in 1951, Mr. Ward served time in Canon City (the Colorado State Peniteniary-5 years) and Leavenworth (2 years) for financial fraud and conspriacy, and mail fraud, respectively-he had obtained bank loans from several financial institutions using the same inventory of new Hudson automobiles as collateral.
After his release, he worked on several inventions for the mass market. Prior to his conviction, owned and greatly enhanced an exquisite (with white buildings with red tile roofs and trim, and fences with white posts and red railings) 152 acre ranch purchased in 1948-which Ward called The Hacienda-with a 20-room mansion at 120th Avenue and Tejon in Adams County, Colorado (near Cozy Corner which was located at Federal Boulevard and 120th Avenue), east of Broomfield, where he hosted such guests as Bob Hope (1903-2003) and Jane Russell (1921- ). The property was popularly referred to by locals and by the press as "The Fred Ward Ranch," is now annexed as part of the city of Westminster, and is still known as 'The Ranch,'hosting The Ranch Country Club and housing developments, and a spectacular view of the front range of the Rocky Mountains.
