Justina Wedin was traveling in steerage with her nine children aboard the SS Norge.
She was married to Marten Wedin, who had immigrated to Uppsala, Minnesota to make a home for his family. Following a running competition between shipping companies, the price of steerage travel aboard Danish ships was decreased significantly. Marten bought and sent tickets for his family to join him.
Justina was known for being a very happy woman, who would often be found singing while doing chores with her children.
The family were able to make it to the top deck in time for the last lifeboat to be launched. Her 4-year-old son, Thure, was picked up and tossed in to the lifeboat before she realized it. Gracious that at least one of her children was saved, she tried to find something for the others.
Her eldest son, 19-year-old Martin, Jr., feared for young Thure being alone, and jumped in to the sea. He swam out to the lifeboat and was taken on board.
Only Martin, Jr and Thure were saved. None of the Wedin's bodies were ever recovered.
Many years after the disaster, family descendants living in Borgvattnet, Sweden, erected a large memorial for Justina and her children, which stills stands today.
