John Henry Forry, son of Fredrick and Elizabeth Forry, born in Pennsylvania, was born May 7, 1834, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, son of parents also born in that state. He died March 23, 1886, at the age of 51 years, 10 months and 16 days at Barron, Wisconsin and was buried there in Wayside Cemetery.

On February 2, 1868, John H. Forry was married at Avoca, Palaski Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin, by William Spenser, JP, to Ellen A. Post, born May 7, 1846, in Scott Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, daughter of James Post and Axa Hierlihy. She died March 5, 1910, of bright's disease at the home of her daughter Nettie in Reardon, Washington. The witnesses were her father James Post and Torry Spencer. John was a miller at the time of his marriage which was performed at the home of Ellen's parents. Of their 14 children, only the names and birthdates of the following 10 are known:

Frederick, Frank, Bertie and Nellie were born in Paynesville, Stearns County, Minnesota. Harry was born in Sextonville, Richland County, Wisconsin and Hettie May in Loyd Township, of the same county. Mable, George and Herman Forry were born in Barron County, Wisconsin.

Herman Forry was born five months after the death of his father on March 23, 1886 at the age of 44 years. Frank was known to have been the fourth born child, indicating that there were three other children born before him of whom only the name of two are known. One of the unknown children may have been Raymond Forry.

In the 1880 US Census, John Forry was a 46 year old miller, living in Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin, with his 34 year old wife Ellen and their seven children: John, age 10; Fred, age 7; Frank, age 6; Bert, age 5; Nellie, age 4; Ross, age 2; and on year old Hettie Forry.

In the 1890 US Special Census for surviving veterans and widows, Ellen A. Forry was listed as the widow of John Forry, who served as First Sgt of Company A of the 33rd Wisconsin Infantry, and was living in Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin.

In the 1900 US Census, Ellen Forry was a 54 year old widowed farm overseer living in Barron Township, Barron County, Wisconsin, with her children; Fred Jr., a 27 year old farm laborer; Bert R., a 25 year old farm laborer; Nellie E., a 24 year old schoolteacher; Ross, a 22 year old farm laborer; Mable, age 19; George L., age 16; and 13 year old Herman Forry.

John was A Civil War veteran having served as a Sergeant in Company A, 33rd Wisconsin Infantry. He enlisted August 15, 1862, at Avoca, Pulaski Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin, to serve three years as Third Corporal and on October 18, 1862, was mustered into Federal service with Company A at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At that time he received $25.00 of his $100.00 enlistment bounty, $13.00 advance pay and was listed as a six foot tall, well built miller, with dark hair, dark eyes and a dark complexion, born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Examination of his compiled service record at the National Archives revealed that John was promoted several times. The Muster Roll of Nov/Dec, 1862, noted that he had been promoted to Second Corporal; the Muster Roll of Jan/Feb 1863 noted that he had been promoted to First Corporal, February 22, 1863; and the Muster Roll of May/June 1863 noted he had been promoted to Fifth Sergt., May 7, 1863. The muster roll of Sep./Oct, 1863, revealed that he was 4th Sergeant and on detached service in the Pioneer Corps 4th District, 17th A.C. The Muster Roll of Nov/Dec. 1863, revealed that his pay was to be stopped for one Waist Belt & Plate; one Cartridge Box Plate; and one Cartridge Belt Plate. No explanation or cost was given for that stoppage.

On the muster roll of Nov./Dec., 1864, his rank was noted as 3rd Sergeant, which rank he held the rest of his time in military service.

On August 9, 1865, John was mustered out of Federal service with Company A at Vicksburg, Mississippi. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due the last $75.00 of his enlistment bounty. His pay was deducted 66 cents for tobacco and $6.00 for arms and accouterments retained, indicating that he kept his military rife and accouterments.

Obituary

Died. At his residence in the town of Barron, on the 23rd inst., of pneumonia, John Forry, aged about 50 years.
It is seldom our office to chronicle a death so sad to the immediate relatives as that of Mr. Forry. The deceased was a kind husband and father, an upright citizen and a sober and hard working man. He leaves a wife, and nine children under seventeen years of age, whose support has heretofore been mainly the labor of the deceased. [Published Friday, March 26th, 1886, Barron Co.
