Fischer was born Sept. 9, 1942, in Waco. He moved with his family to Killeen in 1959. In October 1963, four months after he married his wife, Marie, he became an employee of the Killeen Fire Department. Fischer worked his way up through the ranks and was promoted to fire chief of the department in May 1988. He retired in July 1993, after 30 years of service.
Hawthorn worked at the fire department when Fischer was the deputy fire chief and when he was promoted as fire chief. He said it is admirable that Fischer worked his way through the ranks to be fire chief.
Current Killeen fire chief J.D. Gardner said though he did not get to work with Fischer, he met with him briefly several years after his retirement at social events. During these short meetings, Gardner was able to grasp how committed Fischer was to the fire department.
"He seemed to be a very genuine individual, and he still genuinely cared about the Killeen Fire Department," Gardner said. "You could see through his years of service that he was well respected in the Killeen Fire Department."
Gardner added that Fischer's dedication to serve people was unwavering, whether it to his family, especially his children and grandchildren; or to the organizations where he was a member, which included Scottish Rite, Blue Lodge #1125 and York Rite.
"He was your friend," said his wife, Marie. "He was dependable."
Fischer was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Elise Fischer, and a daughter, Laura Elise Fischer. Survivors include his wife, Marie (Vicky) Fischer; two sons, Robby and David Fischer; one brother, Kenneth Fischer and three grandchildren, Ross, Liam Fischer and Taylor Valles.
