A Life Remembered ~ John J. Blauvelt

The following information was contributed by Carole Nurmi Cummings, a Dutch descendant from the 1600s and a grand niece.

Wife, Mary,
My sister, Sarah , who lives with me, all my lands in Orange Town,
Heirs of my sister, Catharine,
Jacobus Thew, the only heir of my sister, Elizabeth,
My sister, Margritie,
My sister, Mary,
My brother's children: John Blauvelt ... land in Clarkstown, Casparis Blauvelt and Jacobus Blauvelt,
Provides that James Tunuer, who now lives with me, shall be supported,
Negro wench, Hen, and the two children, Mary and Silas, to be free six years after my decease,

Executors: Jacobus Perry , Daniel J. Haring , and my sister, Sarah , who now lives with me, and to her heirs and assigns all of Land lying in Orange Town with all the Buildings and Improvements thereon and likewise the westerly one equal half part of my Salt Meadows and also all of my personal estate of whatever kind or nature it may be provided she paying therefor the several and respective Legacies hereafter mentioned (that is to say) the sum of one hundred & Twenty five Dollars to the Heirs of my Sister Catharina, the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to Jacobus Thew, the only and lawful Heir of my Sister Elizabeth, the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to the Heirs of my Sister Margritie and the sum of one hundred & twenty five Dollars to the Heirs of my Sister Mary, which several Legacies I will and require must be paid within Six years after my Decease.

Item … I do Give devise and bequeath unto my Brothers son John Blauvelt and to his heirs and assigns a certain piece or parcel of Land and Meadows it being the Easterly part of my Land lying in Clarkstown and also the Easterly one equal half of my Salt Meadow Provided he paying therefor the sum of Two Hundred & Fifty Dollars unto his Two Brothers viz Casparis and Jacobus and to their heirs and assigns within Six years after my decease.

Item … I do further give and devise unto the said Johannis Blauvelt Casparis Blauvelt and Jacobus Blauvelt and to their Heirs and assigns the westerly part of my Land lying in Clarkstown to be by them equally divided.

Item … I do further order and require that my Negroe wench named Hen and the Two Children named Mary and Silas shall at the expiration of Six Years after my decease be free and

Lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my trusty friends James Perry , and Daniel J. Haring Executors and my Sister Sarah Executrix to this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and disallowing all other and former wills by me made.

In Witness whereof I have to these presents set my hand and seal the fourteenth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine 1799------

Whereas I Johannis Jac Blauvelt Hath made some time ago a will and it is not as I shou'd wish to have it, Do therefore make this Codical that it might be annexed and made part of my said will.

Item … I have made unto my Brother's Son Jacobus Blauvelt in my said will all of my Westerly Lot of Land lying in Clarkstown, But do now hereby order that fifteen Acres out of the same from the west end shall be taken and put to my Land whereon I now dwell for the use and benefit of my Sister Sarah and her heirs and the remainder of the said Lot I will and require shall be divided in four equal parts one Fourth Part to my Sister Margritie one Fourth part to the heirs of my Sister Maria one fourth to the heirs of my Sister Catharina nd the other fourth part to the Heirs of my Sister Elisabeth, and my other Lot of Land and Meadow lying in Clarkstown which I have made in my will to my Brothers Sons John and Casparis I do order and require shall be equally divided by my said Brothers Sons John Jacobus and Casparis and their Heirs, and further I have made in my will, the one half of my Salt Meadow to the said John Blauvelt, I do hereby order and require that the same shall be for the use of my Sister Sarah and her Heirs, it is my will that above shall be part of my said will,

Be it remembered that on the twenty second day of January in the Year of our Lord one thous. and eight hundred and three, personally came and appeared before me Peter Taulman Surrogate of the said County, John J Blauvelt of the Town of Orange in said County and State of New York, Farmer, who being duly sworn, on his oath declared that he did see Johannes Jacobus Blauvelt deceased, sign and seal the written instrument then shewn unto him, of which the first of the preceeding is a true copy, purporting to be the last will and testament of the said Johannes Jaco. Blauvelt, bearing date the fourteenth day of October in the Years of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine, and heard him publish and declare the same, as and for his last will and testament, that at the time thereof, he the said Johannes Jaco. Blauvelt, was of sound disposing mind and memory, to the best of the knowledge and belief of him the deponent, and that he, together with John Perry and Jacobus Jo. Blauvelt, subscribed their names to the said will as witnesses, in the testators presence, and in the presence of each other --- And also on the said twenty second day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and three, personally came and appeared before me, Peter Taulman, Surrogate of the said County of Rockland, Johannes Blauvelt of the Town of Orange in said County Farmer who being duly sworn, upon his oath declared, that he did see Johannes Jaco. Blauvelt deceased sign and seal the written instrument then shewn unto him, of which the second of the preceding is a true copy, purporting to be the Codicil to the last will and testament of the said Johannes Jacob Blauvelt, bearing date of the Eighth day of January one thousand eight hundred and three, and heard him publish and declare the same as and for a a Codicil to be annexed to his last will and testament, that at the time thereof, he the said Johannes Jaco.
