Hobart was a Veteran of World War I, having served as a Private in the U.S. Army at the #9 Recruit Depot at Camp Shelby, Miss. He enlisted Oct. 23, 1918 at Barron, Wiscondin and was discharged March 1, 1919.

Obituary: Hobert M. Smith, age 90, of Barron, died Oct. 13, at his home. He was born July 30, 1897, at Dallas, to Clint and Katherine Smith. Mr. Smith was raised in the Dallas area and served with the U.S. Army and Navy during WW I.
In Dec., 1932, Hobert married Bertha Cole at Dallas, Wis. Mr. Smith worked on the ore boats on the Great Lakes, and later for the Barron County road crew for many years. He was a member of the Barron American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, Curtis, and one grandson, Michael. He is survived by sons, Marshall and Cary of Hayward, Niles of St. Paul, and Terry of Salem, WI; one daughter Jelaine Gruber of Burlington, WI; and by one sister Ruby Parks of Chetek.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Rausch-Rockman Funeral Chapel in Barron with the Rev. Earl Kammerud officiating. Burial was at the Dallas Cemetery.
