First married to August Rene Chouteau (the grandson of explorer Pierre Chouteau), Rebecca then married Captain Joseph A. Sire after Chouteau's death. She spent countless hous caring for the wounded soldiers of both the North and the South during the Civil War, even taking untold numbers into her own home. She served as President of the Southern Relief Fair, often spending her own funds.
