Mary Ella Edwards was born at Broad Top Mountain, near McConnellstown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Robert Edwards, Jr. and Ruth Stevens Edwards. At age 7, in 1847, she moved with her parents from McConnellstown, Pennsylvania, to Licking County, Ohio, 23 miles east of Columbus.
She married George W. Waller on May 15, 1858, in Licking County, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Army in May 1861, and died of apoplexy (a stroke) the day after the Battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862).
In June 1862, Mary came to Iowa with her 2 daughters, Anna A. and Maria M.; her father, sisters, and one brother. They settled near Tracy in Marion County.
Mary Ella Edwards Waller married widower Charles Gordon Cooper on October 28, 1862, in Marion County, Iowa. 8 children were born to them. Mary was a resident of Knoxville for 35 years.
From her obituary: Died at the home of a daughter, at the age of 88 years, 3 months, and 27 days. At her bedside were 6 of her children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She left 9 children, 50 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Mary was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church throughout her life. When unable to attend church the past few years, she was a devout listener to the radio service. As long as she was able to read, the Bible was her daily companion. She was loved for her thoughtfulness, cheerfulness, and kindness. Funeral services were at the Methodist Episcopal Church Monday, July 2, at 1:30 p.m.
