Merlene Rona "Merle" Cornwell, 66, of Salina, passed away Friday, June 17, 2011, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. She was born April 1, 1945, in Hope, Kan., the daughter of the late William and Meldia (Catlin) Birka. She was the wife of Larry Cornwell, who survives.
Merle was a high school graduate and she worked as an occupational trainer at OCCK in Salina. She was also a member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, in rural Dickinson County, near Abilene.
Merle is survived by her husband, Larry, of the home; a brother-in-law, Paul (Carol) Cornwell, of Salina; a sister-in-law, Kay Carlson and husband Fred, of Hillsboro; three nieces; four nephews; and her cat, "Sam."
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Marlene Birka.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, Salina, with family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Abilene, with the Rev. Charles Norman and the Rev. Stan Norman officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery near Enterprise.
