Garth Lamar Allred 1939 ~ 2011

Garth Lamar Allred, 72, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, counselor and friend passed away peacefully on June 9, 2011 in Provo Utah.

Garth was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada in 1939 to Golden Allred and Josephine Leavitt. He came to Utah at the age of nine and grew up in Provo. He completed a two-year LDS mission in the Eastern States mission afterwhich he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Brigham Young University. After moving to Florida in 1971, he obtained his doctorate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University.

Garth loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and was employed through most of his career as a religious educator for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He began his teaching career as a seminary teacher and then moved to teaching institute and religion classes for more than three decades. Garth taught at Florida State University, Dixie College and BYU-Hawaii. Moving to Hawaii in 1986 was the beginning of a more than twenty-year teaching experience at BYU-Hawaii. Garth loved the Polynesian people and counted many of his closest friends from among them. His love was teaching and he felt no greater joy than when his students discovered the wonders and power of the gospel for themselves. Garth had a special love for the prophet Joseph Smith and regularly taught classes on his teachings. A highlight of his career was spending a year in 1992 teaching at the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies.

In his other church service, Garth served as a Sunday School teacher, bishop, stake president, temple worker and faithful home teacher. He was the author of two books, The Eternal Plan of Happiness and Unlocking the Powers of Faith.

Garth was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Best, with whom he raised eight children. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Velora Smith (Wayne) and Orvilla Stevens (Blayne). He is survived by his loving and attentive wife, Noriko N., his siblings: Hugh Allred (Carolyn), Duane Allred (Margie) and Sheryle Cloward (Sherman), and his eight children: Scott Allred (Diana), Darron Allred (Jodi), Angela Allred, David Allred (Ann), JoEll Pratte (Doran), Michael John Allred (Richelle), Amber DeGraw (Andy) and Marc Allred (Echo). Garth has 31 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18th at 12:00 p.m. in the Saratoga Springs South Utah Stake Center at 2947 Swainson Ave. Friends are invited to a viewing from 10:00-11:45 a.m. that day at the Stake Center.
