(1920-1950)

Gunnery Sergeant Neal A. Straley lost his life February 14, 1950 during a wintertime training mission that departed from Eielson Air Force Base, Fairbanks, Alaska, with 17 occupants aboard a Consolidated B-36B-15-CF Peacemaker. Three of the giant bomber's six engines caught fire owing to carburetor icing in the intense cold and had to be shut down. The three remaining engines were only producing limited power and the plane could not maintain height. The copilot was able to fly over Princess Royal Island where his 16 occupants parachuted out of the plane. Four, including Neal Straley, did not survive and are presumed to have descended into the freezing sea. The copilot lost his life when the plane crashed into Mount Kologet, Northern British Columbia. The five crew members lost were: Copilot: Capt. Theodore F. Schreier; Navigator: Capt. William Phillips; Bombardier: 1st Lt Holiel Ascol; Gunner: SSgt Neal A. Straley; Gunner: SSgt Elbert W. Pollard (source: Flight Safety Foundation)
