Velma Sturgeon Alcorn, 85, Hot Springs, Arkansas, died Saturday, October 18, 2003, at a local hospital. She was born January 5, 1918, in Paso Robles [U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 indicates she was born in Creston], California, to George and Josephine (Morris) Sturgeon.
Velma was a houseparent at Hillcrest Children's Home and a devoted minister's wife for 53 years. She was of the Assembly of God faith.
She is predeceased by her husband, James W. Alcorn; her parents; one sister, Gladys Martin; and three brothers, Carl, Dale and Francis Sturgeon.
Survivors include two daughters, Miriam DeFrancesco of Hot Springs, and Ruth and Glenn Rediger of Cathedral City, California; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilmer and LaVersa Sturgeon of Bakersfield, California, and Vernon and Edythe Sturgeon of Oregon; one sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Dale Barkley of Paso Robles, California; and six grandchildren, Deanna Ellingson, Vivica Kemp, Robin Burbridge, Taunya Hicks, Mychelle Turner and Sonya Vroman.
Visitation is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 24, 2003, at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home, Hot Springs.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Hay and the Rev. Fairland Herring officiating. Burial will follow in Morning Star Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Rick Burbridge, Doug Ellingson, Michael DeFrancesco and Wesley Chitwood.
