Gladys Fay Buskirk Purcell of 524 Webster Street, South Boston died Friday, June 3, 2011 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born in Grundy on Nov. 12, 1913, she was 97 at the time of her death and was the daughter of the late William D. Buskirk and Cora Alice Elswick Buskirk.

She was married to the late John Purcell.

She studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. She received her Master's degree from the University of Michigan and she taught music in Grundy for 20 years before moving to Michigan where she taught there for 14 years. She conducted a Glee Club and wrote many songs. She was a member of Centerville Baptist Church where she was a devoted piano assistant for 32 years. She was also an advocate leader in the Halifax County Republican Party. Mrs. Purcell loved her God, her country and her fellow man.

Mrs. Purcell is survived by a son, Ronald K. Charles and wife Gayle Randolph Charles of Los Angeles, and a sister, Marie William of Grundy and a special friend and caretaker, Irvin Conner of Alton.

A funeral for Mrs. Purcell will be held Tuesday, June 7 at 2 p.m. at Centerville Baptist Church with the Rev. Todd McClure officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.

A visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.
