Joseph Marion Helhoski, 91, of Prescott, Ariz., passed away Sunday, May 30, 2011, in Prescott. He was born Nov. 22, 1919, in Goshen, N.Y., the son of Wladislaw Helhoski and Marianna Caplicki. He was one of seven children, including five boys and two girls. Preceding him in death were Sylvester, Stanley, Greg and Alice.

He is survived by siblings Teresa Andrusca of Avenel, N.J., and Edward Helhoski of Henderson, Nev. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Marian. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Sparling of Flagstaff, Ariz., Sandra Steward of Tucson, Ariz., and Sharon Harrington of Bullhead City, Ariz.

Joe was a natural-born mechanic with incredible aptitude for machines, motors and anything with moving parts. He could fix anything. After serving his country with distinction in the Army Air Corps, he worked as an automotive mechanic. In 1956, he moved to Arizona and realized his dream of owning his own automotive garage outside Congress Junction. He was successful in this venture and often assisted stranded travelers who broke down in that remote area. He also ventured into some gold-mining activities. In 1962, he purchased the Piñon Pines Bar & Grill and Motel in Prescott, which he and Marian operated for many years. After retiring from that business, he operated a contract mail route between Prescott, Skull Valley and Bagdad.

Joe will be remembered by his many friends for his love of fishing, golfing, swimming and downhill skiing. He had been a member of the Ski Club in Prescott, and was an active member of the local American Legion Post and the Prescott Canyon Estates Homeowners Association.

A memorial service will take place 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the Heritage Memory Mortuary, 131 Grove, Prescott, Ariz., with graveside military honors scheduled that afternoon at 2 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Phoenix.
