Edna Mae Barnes, age 88, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 30, 2011 at the St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was born on November 22, 1922, in Pierce City, Missouri, the daughter of Alfie and Sylvia (Palmer) Metheny. She was a retired dietitian from the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon, a hospice volunteer and of the Methodist faith. On June 7, 1941 she married Raymond Barnes in Polacious, Texas. He preceded her in death on November 13, 1968.

Those surviving her include: one son, Steve Barnes and his wife, Terry, of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Frances Heeter of Jefferson City, Missouri; three grand children, Derick Barnes and his wife, Lisa, Greg Barnes and his wife, Melissa, all of Mt. Vernon and Suzane Fredrickson and her husband, Keith, of Minnesota. Her parents, one granddaughter, Stephanie Barnes, and her beloved dog Tyler also preceded her in death.

A graveside service, under the direction of Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home chapel. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in care of the funeral home.
