John's father Rev John Forbes was among the founders of Presbyterianism, and the colony in Leyden was a Continental counterpart to similar enclaves the Forbeses founded in Ulster-- and ultimately, Massachusetts Bay. This John Forbes/Fobes made the Atlantic passage with the sect led by Rev Robinson, and was part of the group that founded Duxbury in 1636.
John was a tailor by trade, and an activist in public life in the tradition of his father and uncle (Patrick Forbes)-- he served Duxbury as a constable, and was on numerous occations a juror.

JOHN FOBES, by tradition, son of Rev. John Forbes; born in Scotland soon after 1600; grew up in Holland, it is said, where he acquired a soft accent resulting in the recording of the name as Vobes, or Ffobes & finally FOBES; one of fifteen young men who landed in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA, in 1636; indentured to Isaac Allerton, richest man in Plymouth Colony, to pay for passage; in 1637 was known to be at Powder point, also at Green Harbor; granted land at Powder Point, built a home and lived there five years; a tailor by trade; married before Bridgewater, Constant Mitchell, (daughter of Thomas Mitchell and Margaret Vochin), who was born in Leyden, Holland, (after the birth in 1609 of an older brother Experience Mitchell who came to America on 3rd ship, the ANN, in 1623); he appears in list of men able to bear arms 1643; became an original proprietor in 1645 of Bridgewater, MA; made a "freeman" with voting rights in 1645 (indicating he was not originally a member of the English Puritan Church); a man of standing and local influence; Constable in 1651 and a juror in 1659; he died 1660; his wife married second in 1662, John Briggs 1609-1690, of Portsmouth, R I., Commissioner to R I Court 1654-56, 59, 61-63, when she was about 45-50 years old.

The name FOBES is thus an AMERICAN name and one can expect that all who bear the name are descended from the above immigrant ancestor John.

Thank you for maintaining the memorial for John Fobes, Jr. I believe the John Fobes buried in Old Town Cemetery, Sandwich, MA is his son, John III. Based on records I have found, John Jr died in Bridgewater about 1660 and was, probably buried there. His son died at the home of George Allin 10 Jul 1661 and was buried shortly there after, assumption the burial was in Sandwich. There are no MA vital records or location/family histories to support the death of either John. Inventory date for John Jr of Bridgewater was 31 Jul 1662. That said, according to records of Plymouth, Vol III, p 200: 13 Jun 1660: "request made to the court by the widdow Vobes requesting some supply of land in respect unto the conditions of an indenture made betwixt Mr Isacke Allerton and her husband, John Vobes, lately deceased. The court gives liberty that any for her may looke out some land for her supply and a competency will be granted and confirmed unto her." Regards,
