"On the 17th October 1941, Spitfire 1A Serial X4904 flown by Pilot Offr Sly took off from Grangemouth at 10:21 hrs and was last heard from on w/t at 11:33 hrs but did not respond to repeated calls from 11:55 hrs. The aircraft failed to return after flying in formation between Cupar and Leuchars in Fife. Pilot Offr Sly was found in his burnt out aircraft at Maddy Moss in the Ochil Hills north-west of Dollar in Clackmannanshire".
