Joel was the oldest child of farmers Powel & Derecy (McCormack) Butler. After serving in the Civil War, he married Sarah E. Clark in Mercer Co, WV on Dec 6, 1866, and they had 8 children (see spouse).

Note: Joel's sister Malinda and brother Zachariah married Sarah's brother James and sister Paulina.
