Mr. Samuel Thomas Batts, 60, of 208 S. Mineral Springs Rd. died Thursday at Duke Medical Center. A life-long resident of Durham, he was the son of Mrs. Irene Blalock Batts and the late Ralph Batts. For many years he worked as a maintenance technician with Durham Volkswagen/Porsche Audi, and had also served in the NC National Guard. Disability forced early retirement, but failed to blunt his love for his family or his enthusiastic creativity. He was very mechanically inclined, filling his yard with windmills and many other entertaining, personal creations. Mr. Batts was an avid fisherman, one of the many hobbies he enjoyed. He was a member of McMannen United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Kim Stainback and her husband, Richard, of Durham, and Traci Gornto and her husband, Andrew, from Hillsborough; his half Brother, Ralph Batts, Jr. of Spring Grove, PA; his grandson, Michael J. Gornto; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 AM in McMannen United Methodist Church, Rev. Robert C. Redmond officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 PM at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to the building fund of McMannen United Methodist Church, 4102 Neal Rd., Durham, NC 27705.
