Chester W. Alheim

Chester "Chet" W. Alheim, 89, died Monday, May 16, 2011 at IU Health Goshen Hospital.

He was born on October 24, 1921 in Albion to the late Chester Boyd and Laura I. (Pendroy) Alheim. He moved to Goshen in 1924 and resided with R.E. Connell on south 8th street.

He married Phyllis Suzanne (Ulery) Xanders on May 25, 1946 in Goshen. She preceded him in death in December 1991.

Mr. Alheim worked as a meatcutter at Wilson Grocery and at W.W. Wilts Grocery, he retired from there in 1986. A 1939 graduate of Goshen High School, Mr. Alheim then worked at the Goshen News from 1939-1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and he served in Europe during World War II. He was discharged from the military as 1st Sgt. on November 18, 1945. Mr. Alheim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Goshen, the American Legion #30, and the VFW Post 985. He served as a member of the Honor Guard.

He is survived by one son, William S. Alheim, Goshen; one daughter, Suzanne (Chris) Sears, Elkhart; one son, Jerome "Jerry" (Marcia) Xanders, Syracuse; one sister, Virginia Smith; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jefrey David Alheim; one sister, Betty Smith; one brother, Max Adam Alheim; and one granddaughter, Christine Suzanne Xanders.

A 1 p.m. graveside service, with military honors, will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.

Rev. Alan Griffin of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made out to VFW Post 985.
