Prior to service in the 148th, enlisted in Albany, New York into the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was also known as "Ellsworth Avengers." It was a rather elite regiment drawing men from all over the state of New York. There were specific requirements that had to be met to even be considered. One had to be at least 5' 9" tall, single and of good moral character. On August 8, 1861 mustered into Co. B. as a Sgt. However was discharged at Canaodaigua, New York, on 1 November 1861.

Elam C. Beeman a prominent lawyer of Canandaigua, who had been in poor health for some time, died at Jackson, Mich., on Sunday. Mr. Beeman was on his way to Denver, where he hoped to find relief, and had stopped for a visit, when death claimed him.
