Jessie Albert Armstrong of Alvin passed away Aug. 8, 2001 at his residence. He was a resident of Alvin for 20 years moving here from Houston. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Manvel, Texas. He was born June 4, 1925 in Kemp, Texas to Carl Carthel and Lula Mae Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill.

Surviving him are his daughter, Jessica Armstrong Westbrook and husband, Jonathan, of San Jose, California; grandson, Joshua Westbrook of San Jose, California; and a brother, C.C. Armstrong and wife, Lucy Mae, of Kerrville, Texas. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held Sunday, August 12, from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Oak Park Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held Monday, August 13, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Oak Park Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville, Texas.

Serving the family, Oak Park Funeral Home, 300 Oak Park Drive, Alvin, Texas.Jesse Albert Armstrong was born June 4, 1925, in the West Texas town of Terrell, the youngest of three brothers born to his Methodist minister father and homemaker mother. He grew up in West Texas, graduating from Canyon High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Coast Guard soon after turning 19 in 1943 and served in the Pacific until the end of WWII. His service awards included American and Pacific Area campaign, four bronze engagement stars, and Victory medals. In addition, he was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for his participation in the Marshall Islands Operation aboard the USS Leonard Wood. Other ships he served on included USS Cambria, USS LST 786, and the USS Relief.

Following his honorable discharge at the end of WWII, he attended West Texas State University and Southern Methodist University, receiving his bachelor's degree in marketing from SMU in 1950. In his lifetime, he was postmaster of Angleton (1954-60), a real estate broker (1960-80), Alcohol and Drug Counselor at the Houston VA Hospital (1971-80), and concurrently at Hughes Tool Co. (1975-80). Following his move to Alvin in 1980, he was Employment Assistance Counselor at both Dow Chemical Co., and Hughs Tool Co. (1980-85), and then coordinator of the Employment Assistance Program at Dow Chemical from 1985 until his retirement in 1995.

Jesse spent most of his life helping others, and this included his own 40 years of sobriety as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He also held drug and alcohol counseling groups for prison inmates and helped found Houston Halfway House. He found purpose and meaning in helping others overcome alcohol and drug problems, and truly attempted to live by the Serenity Prayer. He found great strength and solace in his faith in God, living one day at a time.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jessica Armstrong Westbrook and Jonathan Westbrook; his grandson, Joshua Westbrook; brother and sister-in-law, C.C. and Lucy Mae Armstrong; nephews, Jimmy and Larry and their families; as well his extended at Grace United Methodist Church and in Alcoholics Anonymous.
