John, the son Martin W. Donahue Sr. and Margaret Donahue of Taunton MA enlisted in the US Navy on March 17 1966, in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam on March 18, 1968 and was assigned as a Medical Corpsman to H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines (Rein) FMF.

– On May 22, while on a combat patrol near the hamlet of An My in Dai Loc District, an AP (Anti-Personnel) mine suspected to have been a buried 60 mm mortar round was detonated. The explosion wounded a Marine and HM3 Donahue; both were evacuated to the Station Hospital NSA in Da Nang, where HM3 Donahue died on May 28 as a result of fragmentation wounds from the hostile explosive device he had sustained.

* HM3 Donahue was presented with the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" posthumously "For heroic service ....from 18 March to 22 May 1968...."
