He entered the Confederate service at age 17 and was wounded near Petersburg on 24 August 1864. Captured in March of 1865, he was held at Point Lookout until June. After the war, he farmed until, at the age of twenty-three, he was elected sheriff of Brunswick county. After nine years, he resigned that to become Inspector of Tobacco, at the Center Warehouse in Petersburg. He was elected city sergeant in 1888.
